Ohmium International, the US international tech company, which designs, manufactures and implements advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, is starting a collaboration with HYGRO, a Dutch provider of green hydrogen solutions. This collaboration begins with a new hydrogen production and distribution project in North Holland (project Duwaal).
The Duwaal project demonstrates how Ohmium's electrolysers can work together with wind turbines, using HYGRO's knowledge and patents on this concept, and also incorporating HYGRO's new iBundle - a new storage, transport and fast tank system. This integrated approach is crucial to the success of the hub, iBundle and satellite strategy, which will be rolled out in phases in the Netherlands and internationally.
Supported by the Dutch government, the project will be developed in phases, starting with a capacity of 2.5 MW in 2025. With support from the Dutch government, there are plans to expand this to 5 MW and possibly up to 10 MW.
‘Ohmium shares HYGRO's vision for an integrated green hydrogen supply chain to promote a sustainable and fossil-free future,’ said Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium. ‘We are excited to apply our PEM electrolysis technology in this project and further demonstrate the potential of the renewable energy ecosystem.’
‘Ohmium's PEM electrolyzers and advanced power electronics enable direct integration with HYGRO's wind turbines for streamlined, efficient and affordable production of green hydrogen,’ said Hugo Groenemans, CEO of HYGRO. ‘We look forward to working together to build the sustainable energy chain throughout the Netherlands.’
Within the Duwaal demonstration project, scheduled for a 2025 launch at the EWEF Wind Farm in Wieringerwerf, Ohmium will integrate PEM electrolysers with HYGRO's wind turbine to produce green hydrogen. This hydrogen will be distributed to regional filling stations using HYGRO's iBundles.
The project will include a hybrid system where both the electrolyser and the turbine remain connected to the grid. This set-up reduces the impact of changing wind conditions on hydrogen production and also enables a quick response to the electricity market, which often has low prices, on windy and/or sunny days.
Ohmium's PEM electrolysers and electrochemical solutions are designed for industrial and transport applications, complemented by HYGRO's goal of developing a competitive integrated hydrogen production and distribution system. This includes leveraging their iBundle and pulsed power technology for a comprehensive ‘wind & solar to wheel’ value chain.
The companies have also signed a declaration to further explore how they can enhance each other's product portfolios and jointly strengthen and expand the market.
